At Mishimoto, our job is to bring you more than just exceptional cooling products. Another product category that we offer is exhausts, and what better car for an exhaust project than the fantastic-sounding Mustang GT! The stock system on the Mustang GT sounds pretty darn good as is, but after inspection we found some ways that we could improve on the stock design.
The stock exhaust manifolds exit into two catalytic converters, one of which is integrated into the exhaust manifold itself. The world may never know. The exhaust is 2. After the resonator the diameter of the exhaust jumps back up to 2. The pipes then snake past the rear differential into two mufflers at the rear with a single tip exiting from each muffler. After spending some time underneath the brand-new GT, we decided that the large resonator in the center of the exhaust could use an immediate upgrade.
Some owners have reported that they saved 20 to 30 pounds by replacing this big hunk of metal with an X or H-pipe resonator. We wanted to test these designs for ourselves. We plan to create one H-pipe design as well as test several X-pipe designs, comparing them with the stock exhaust.
In addition, we have decided to design our own version of the axle-back exhaust to pair with our resonator. In designing our X- and H-pipe resonators for the Mustang GT, we will be using an entirely new design process that utilizes our Waterjet.
Check back for updates on the creation of these resonators! We have a Mustang GT exhaust video where you can listen to all of our axlebacks in relation to one another to choose which is best for you. You can also check out this post for more testing details and a dyno video of each exhaust. stock exhaust size 2.75 or 3inch?
I had posted in the thread on the reverse camera that I would post a solution to the exhaust valve. I will make this a multi-part post offering an overview and multiple solutions ranging from very cheap to more involved and elegant but also a tiny bit more expensive.
So first a quick overview of the circuit we are dealing with:. Last edited: Sep 15, VoodooBoss Rick Moderator. You beat me to it. Did you copy everything over from the other thread? And you control it from the dash or where ever you mount the switch without having to do a thing like switch harnesses, or plug in resistors. You could technically, keep the switch in OEM mode and as you approach the station on the track that measures sound levels, switch the vales off and when you pass the station turn the vales back on A GPS switch would be the ultimate but I'm not holding my breath on that.
If you have programming skills, it'd be relatively straightforward to plug a GPS receiver into a Raspberry Pi running an app that flips a switch based on whether you're inside or outside a geofence box. If you build blk's switch setup so it has a control relay as well as a manual switch in it, then you're golden. Here is installment 2 on this post As I had mentioned above, variation 2 on this basic solution is a version that does not require cutting into the wiring harness.
It turns out that Ford sells all of the connectors found in our cars. In this case, we are interested in both the female and male counterparts of connector C Here are the Ford service part numbers: Male -??? Last edited: Sep 23, Removing the Exhaust Valve Relay As to the solution with removing the relay that feeds power to the exhaust valve solenoids, technically it should work without throwing DTC codes or disabling Drive Modes.
The theory was correct but the implementation is wrong. Before I post the solution I would like to try it out. I will post back if it works. Should be a relatively simple solution if it works and you really want to disable the exhaust valves by pulling the relay. Found this:. JAJ said:. Ok but that is not a Mustang GT.Forums New posts Search forums.

Mar 24, Starting from the Mustang GT engine, we first have the factory headers, also called exhaust manifolds which are a Tri-Y or also known as a header design. This type of header design is very good as this type of setup offers superior low end performance because of the 3 collectors in a Tri-Y design that optimize scavenging at both high and low RPM and not just one RPM range like you see in a typical header design.
So right from the factory Ford gave these Mustangs a very respectable factory header. Next in line in the Mustang GT exhaust system, we have the Mid Pipes which also contain the catalytic converters. An H-Pipe is generally more so to help with a little more low end torque versus no H-pipe at all. Then next in line in the exhaust system we have what is called the Cat-Back which bolts on behind the catalytic converters. The Cat-Back assembly also consists of the mufflers and the tailpipes which is the final destination of the exhaust gases from your engine.
If you remove the section of the Cat-Back exhaust assembly that contains the mufflers, this part is called the Axle-Back part of the exhaust system.
So the Cat-Back assembly also contains the Axle-Back portion of the exhaust system, so can be replaced by a complete Cat-Back assembly or if just wanting to replace the mufflers, you can just replace the Axle-Back portion of the Cat-Back assembly.
So you now know the Mustang GT stock exhaust system is broken in to sections as Headers exhaust manifoldMid-Pipes, then Cat-Back section which also consists of the Axle-Back portion of the exhaust system. In stock form this factory exhaust really does a good over-all job, but many Mustang GT owners would either like to add more power or just a better sounding exhaust sound than you get from the factory. Adding more power by changing the exhaust manifolds and or you Mustang GT Cat-Back to an aftermarket set-up, will in most cases require a tune to bring it all together to work correctly, but just changing the Axle-Back part of the system which is very popular to do, will not usually require a tune and is more to do with easily changing your Mustang GT exhaust sound.
Most Mustang GT owners will focus on the Axle-Back part of the exhaust system first, as it is the area that most Mustang GT owners want to change to get a more performance oriented exhaust sound and some Axle-Backs can even add a little more power and even drop some weight of the vehicle as well. Mustang performance places such as American Muscle have many Axle-Back systems to choose from and some sound videos as well so you can hear what they sound like.
If you like your Mustang GT basically in stock format but would like a more performance sounding exhaust, an Axle-Back is your easiest route and is generally very easy to install. You now should have a much better idea what your stock Mustang GT exhaust system consists of. Share on Tumblr.Forums New posts Search forums. Media New media Search media. Yes, is it stock 2. If you are just changing the hpipe and catback go with 2. You will not get any major gains if you stay with the 2.
At BORLA, we're excited to offer a number of performance exhaust options for the Mustang, allowing you to customize the way your Mustang looks, sounds, and performs.
Exhaust packages for the Mustang will come in both cat-back and axle-back technologies as well as three different exhaust tones: ATAKS-Type, or Touring.
Now, enthusiasts can apply the same performance exhaust technology to the Ford Mustang S Ford may have decided to remove the V6 engine from the lineup, but that doesn't mean you still don't have two great options to choose from. The Mustang features plenty to get excited about. In order to gain a leg up in its ongoing competition, Ford has engineered the Mustang with a number of upgrades designed to make this latest Mustang go faster, look sleeker, drive better, and provide more safety features for its occupants.
One notable change is the fact that Ford has ditched the V6 engine for the Mustang.
Instead, they will offer a turbocharged 2. Both of these S models will see gains in performance over their counterparts, with the EcoBoost 30 lb-ft more torque and the GT providing 25 more horsepower and 20 lb-ft more torque.
For cars equipped with the Performance Package, the Mustang will come with a sizable, functional rear wing, though performance package buyers will be given the choice to opt out of this significant addition if they so choose.
Other additions new to the Mustang are a new driving mode called Drag Strip which is designed to increase the car's straight-line performance, a pre-collision system, a lane-departure warning, and a lane-keeping assist.
The new S model will provide several exhaust modes to enhance the iconic vehicle experience. Four exhaust modes include a Quiet mode, Standard, Sport, and a snarling Track mode.
